Discount Specifications — Amount off products with quantity limits

With "Amount off products with quantity limits", you can target collections, products and variants. The applicable method decides which items in the cart get the discount, and how many units of them.

Wherever this page says "item", it means a Shopify product variant. The same product in two sizes or colours counts as two separate items.

The three applicable methods

True of every applicable method

An item that is not in the discount targets is not discounted, and it does not use up the maximum quantity either.
Choosing "Do not apply the discount to items already on sale" treats those items the same way. They are not discounted and they do not use the allowance.
Leftover allowance is never passed on to another item.

Every example below uses a discount percentage of 10% and no minimum purchase requirement.

1. Applies only to one specific item in the cart

Only one item is discounted. You then choose which one:

The most expensive item (per unit) — the highest unit price
The least expensive item (per unit) — the lowest unit price
The first item — whichever item comes first in the cart. Unit price is ignored

Settings: Maximum quantity 5 / Discount targets: Collection A (Items A, B and C)

Cart: added in the order Item B → Item A → Item C

The most expensive item: Item A at 500. Even though 7 were bought, the maximum quantity of 5 caps it at 5 units.
The least expensive item: Item C at 300. Only 4 were bought, so 4 units. The one unit of leftover allowance does not pass to Item A or Item B.
